Press: NuStep Pledges $10,000 Matching Gift to Alzheimer’s Association

March 23, 2009

ANN ARBOR, MI - Anyone donating to the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Great Lakes Chapter by June 30, 2009, will double the impact of the contribution, thanks to a $10,000 challenge grant from Michigan-based NuStep, Inc., manufacturer of the NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer. The matching gift pledge is part of NuStep’s top sponsorship of the Association’s “Summer Somewhere: Daytona ‘09” event to be held on Friday, March 27, at Washtenaw Community College. All money raised will help fund local educational and support programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease, their families and caregivers.

“NuStep is a highly valued friend of the Association,” said Elizabeth Longley, President and CEO of the local chapter. “They generously sponsor our Summer Somewhere event, but they help in a number of other ways as well.”

NuStep Vice President Steve Sarns encourages everyone to “Step up to the NuStep challenge” by making a donation to the chapter, whether or not they attend the event. “We believe the Alzheimer’s Association provides essential services to our community and we take pride in supporting such a worthy cause,” he said.

In addition to its support of Summer Somewhere, NuStep will supply their recumbent cross trainer equipment as part of an education and exercise program that the Association will be implementing at assisted living facilities across the 23-county area served by the Michigan Great Lakes Chapter.

Sarns, who is an exercise physiologist, noted that “Alzheimer’s research shows that an active lifestyle can positively affect our brain health and may decrease the risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Our equipment allows people to benefit from exercise even if they have physical limitations due to age or injury, so this is a natural partnership.”

Summer Somewhere is a public event. For that one evening, the Morris Lawrence Building Atrium at Washtenaw Community College will be transformed into Florida’s Daytona Beach raceway, complete with a volunteer pit crew, a “racetrack” of food, live and silent auctions, one-of-a-kind racing memorabilia and entertainment by Toppermost! Beatles Tribute Band. More information on the event is available at www.alz.org/mglc.
